In 1981 Lt. Carlos Pereyra was the officer in charge of the Corbeta Uruguay Scientific Station on Thule Island in the South Sandwich Islands group. He was active as LU3ZY, typically two times a week, using a rhombic antenna aimed at Argentina. At the time South Sandwich was among the rarest entities.
In the last month I received a letter from the doctor who was part of the rotation team there with Lt. Pereyra, Dr. Carlos Court Lucero. He sent me rare color photos of the base and the radio room. The photo of the base was taken from Mount Larsen on Thule, the Twitcher Rock can be seen with Cook Island in the distance.
The base was eventually destroyed by the British Navy in 1983, approximately 9 months after the Falklands War.
