• [NEWS UPDATE] –

Today we have paid our first deposits for the helicopter and vessel contracts in total around $450,000. Paying the deposit as part of the contract signing shows a major commitment from the team, and we will now start the detailed planning.

During the course of the next few weeks we will study and determine the station and antenna setup to be used at Bouvet. With our previous experience from the island and the local conditions we will make sure to adapt the setup and QTH to maximize the team effort. We will also look for synergies with the upcoming Peter I expedition as the intention is that the equipment we select for Bouvet to the extent possible also will be used at Peter I. Looking at synergies between the two expeditions will make it more efficient for both teams.

  • [PRESS RELEASE – 3YØK DXpedition to Bouvet Island, 1st February 2026]

We are pleased to announce the completion of a major milestone by having signed a contract with ICETUGS that will take us to Bouvet Island in February 2026. ICETUGS, an Iceland based company, has an excellent track record in providing services for expeditions, cargo and fuel supplies, tugging, as well as rescue and camp setup in the Arctic and Antarctic regions.

We also report the signing of the helicopter contract with the Cape Town based Ultimate Aviation. This group will supply us with a helicopter, two pilots and a mechanic for this project. Their crew have broad experience in offshore operations across Antarctica, Marion, Gough and Tristan da Cunha Islands, which includes boat to shore, sling and hoist operations associated with police force, military, and private projects. This year they celebrate 10 years of operation in Antarctica 2015-2025. We are confident the helicopter crew and the vessel will make a big difference for us in activating Bouvet Island.

We will depart from Cape Town on February 1st 2026, and the DXpedition is scheduled for 36 days. We intend to stay around the island for more than 21 days, which will provide us with enough time to wait for good conditions to land the team and all the equipment. The leadership have previous experience from landing at Bouvet Island in 2023, and together with the entire team are prepared and committed to re-activate Bouvet Island. We obtained the helicopter permit 6 months ago, and with the 3Y0K license in hand we have all the approvals necessary to go onshore.

Our first deposit of $450,000 will be paid on January 20, 2025. Given the overall budget of $1,675,000, we teamed up with a small private group to share the costs. Our team wishes to use this opportunity to thank all the clubs, associations, and foundations, as well as individuals who have already provided us with their support. Going to such remote places would not be possible without such generous contributions. Meanwhile, we invite those who haven’t done it yet to visit our website and consider making a donation using the respective button or directly via PayPal donate@3y0k.com to help us offset some of our costs.

We are grateful to NCDXF for supporting our expedition. There will be two grants totally up to $200,000. The first will be a downpayment of $100,000. The second will be a dollar for dollar match up to $100,000. The match will be a challenge to the clubs and hams that donate prior to the DXpedition. Please help us meet this target.

We are also seeking more operators. Those interested should contact us at admin@3y0.no.

Our Peter 1 DXpedition is on track, as we have received the landing permit from NPI, and we will sign a contract with ICETUGS to take us there in 2027. We will provide more information at a later stage.

  • [NCDXF PRESS RELEASE]

NCDXF is pleased to announce its financial support for the February 2026 3Y0K Bouvet DXpedition. There will be two grants totalling up to $200,000. The first will be a downpayment of $100,000. The second will be a dollar for dollar match up to $100,000. The match will be a challenge to the clubs and hams that donate prior to the DXpedition.

This DXpedition will be the most expensive ever planned and executed as the team has found a large ship that can take the two helicopters and crew that we believe will have success. They have found 18 experienced operators that are physically and mentally prepared for this adventure. The plan is to stay on the island long enough to make a lot of QSOs on all bands. NCDXF has discussed the planning with their leadership team and believes that this plan will be successful. There is risk associated with this DXpedition as we all know because of weather and local conditions. The leadership has experienced these challenges and has thoughtfully addressed them as best as they know.

— The Plan:

We are negotiating the vessel contract for a DX-pedition to Bouvet Island in the period November 2025 to February 2026. Exact dates TBD. The DXpedition team will consist of up to 20+ operators with extensive experience in DX-pedition and contesting. The plan is to stay 3 weeks around Bouvet Island, and we will use a large vessel and a helicopter to go to Bouvet. The overall expedition budget is estimated to be in the order of $1,600,000 where we will team up with a small private group who will share the cost. The trip will be fully financed upfront but we will continue to seek donations from clubs and individuals to recover some of our expenses. At the time of signing the contract we will launch a fundraising campaign, until then we will not seek donations.

— The Permits:

We will use the callsign 3Y0K and the Norwegian Polar Institute has issued the helicopter permit as of June 2024

— The Camp:

Plan is to stay 3 weeks around the island, and we are considering to setup two camps, one camp at Cape Fie and one camp further west. The second QTH will be dedicated to give better conditions for North America and can be as far west as Larsøya on the southwest side of the island. Above Larsøya with a clear take off to the entire North America from NA east coast to west coast there is a plateau that can be used as camp area. However, the final decision where the second camp will be located will be decided upon doing a recon flight at arrival. For safety and evacuation reasons we will not setup camp on top of the glacier at Olavtoppen.

Krassy K1LZ will be in charge of providing the station equipment, testing, and preparing the setup. A station and camp setup will be published later.
